A friend sent this along: photos from the recent discovery in a remote Egyptian wadi of a damaged RAF P-40 Kittyhawk plane ditched in the desert during WWII and long lost for seven decades. An article update suggests less breathless speculation than what's found in the original piece, which was spurred by markings on the plane that connected it to a prominent Canadian wartime ace, "Stocky" Edwards.
The Sahara is a harsh and unforgiving place, but it also can preserve many things far longer than other climates, as seen in the photos of the plane's wreckage (and the pyramids, for that matter). A find, a true find, for fans of vintage warplanes. Great to see these photos. I'll be interested to see how what history hawks find about this particular Kittyhawk's true provenance and story. If nothing else, perhaps its discovery will provide some final closure for some family who may long have wondered what happened to their son/brother/father/friend.
