WSJ on exhibition about remarkable former slave, soldier, Congressman Robert Smalls

Great piece in the Wall Street Journal today about a South Carolina museum exhibition commemorating a remarkable one-time slave, ship's pilot, soldier, statesman and civil rights leader named Robert Smalls.

The congressman's story is pretty incredible, given the challenges he faced and so masterfully and relentlessly overcame. It's amazing that someone of this level of achievement, in so many ways, is so little known nationally these days. Kudos to the South Carolina State Museum for the Smalls exhibit.

It's also intriguing, deep in the story, to see references to the exhibit including replicas of the "slave badges" that people such as Smalls were required to wear when they were out and about in Charleston before the war (Smalls was allowed to live in the city, away from his owner, and work, but was required to turn most of his wages over to his owner). If anyone has photos of these, please share. And any further photos of materials from Smalls' remarkable life would be welcome, too.
