Cannon Hits The Beach

Many people hope to find buried treasure on a beach, but Miranda Patrone actually did just that. When the Oregon teen spotted a misshapen, rocky blob in the beach sand at Arch Cape, she saw more than a rocky blob - she saw a cannon, or at least a cannon-like shape. This shouldn't really be that big of a surprise as the nearby town of Cannon Beach earned its name thanks to an 1846 shipwreck of the USS Shark. The wreckage included three short cannons that washed ashore with a portion of the ship's deck. One of those cannons was recovered in 1898, but the other two were only recently discovered by Patrone.  These have been sent to Texas A&M University's Nautical Archaeology program, which is working to remove the cannon from their rocky blob prisons.  Why don't I go to the beach more often!
