So Hitler's in the news again. Not because he's a clone roaming the streets of San Paulo Brazil, but because a Turkish company decided to feature him in an ad campaign for men's shampoo. According to the Biomen company, their ad campaign was "misinterpreted" and that the ad pokes fun of Hitler. It's a fine line - between finding Hitler funny, and using him in a spoof. Where were the critics when Monty Python poked fun at "Mr. Hilter" and "Ron Fibbentrop" and "Mr. Bimmler" hiding out in an English resort hotel? What about this sketch which pokes fun at the SS.
Everyone is busy being angry at the Turkish company, but it's a very interesting philosophical question ... when is it okay to laugh at things like Hitler, and when is it not okay? Some people will say that it's never okay, but I'm not so sure.Although the advertisement is obviously in bad taste, you can't help but marvel at just how much press Biomen has gotten as a result of the brouhaha. I mean, have you ever in your life imagined that you'd even know what a Turkish brand of ... anything, is? Still the ends do not justify the means. I won't even make a joke here about split-ends ...
